IWIL 2009: About the Workshop

 

Motivation

Information Technology (IT) is converting libraries from repositories to access points. Accordingly library’s instructional programs are modifying and Information Literacy (IL) programs are evolving. Libraries are gradually taking positions as the centres for implementing information literacy programs. In the age of information technology IL program becomes a complex task which is regularly changing due to technological innovation occurs every day. Librarians need to make themselves qualified to teach its users information literacy skills to make enable their users to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers.

This workshop will play a significant role to introduce this emerging and essential tool in regional libraries and the librarians can play more effective role to ensure the best utilization of resources. It may be mentioned that training on IL will be first of its kind in .

Objectives

Primary Objectives of the Workshop are
1. Introducing the concept of “Information Literacy” in Bangladesh and other SAARC countries (not limited to this countries).
2. Providing hands on training on “Information Literacy”.
3. Building capacity  of the library professionals of the SAARC region (not limited to this countries).
4. Making the librarians competent to run “Information Literacy” programme after the training.

Target Group

Target Group: Library professionals of Bangladesh and other SAARC countries mainly but it is not limited to this region.

Direct benefit: Participants of the workshop will be able to introduce IL in their respective libraries and they can play an important role for improving the information literacy of their organization.

Indirect benefit:  Colleagues of the participants, local librarian of the participants and all the user/customer of their library.

Outcome

The project is an innovative pilot project in Human resources development in a field likely to contribute IL. As such, it has a high potential for replication. A similar approach can be initiated with other Asian partner countries. It could become formal training material to be utilized at all universities in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

The project outcome will allow the professional to go for modern management of library. It will increase possibility of collaboration between government, private organisation, universities and international organisation as this is one of the promising area for further exploitation.
